Propecia is one of the few prescription hair loss treatments. It works by reducing DHT, a substance which thins the hair strands until it is minimally visible. It is designed to reduce further hair loss, and regrow the visible hair. It is most effective for the vertex, or top of head and anterior mid-scalp, or middle front head hair loss patterns.

Propecia is for men only, and has many other restrictions. Not as effective as the other products on the market, but the most concern is possible side effects of the drug. If propecia is accidentally taken in by a pregnant women, abnormalities may occur with the carried child. There are also worries with the sexual side effects such as less desire for sex, among others. Studies show that this case occurs in less than 2% of men who used Propecia.
