Hair Loss in Women
Gone are the days when hair loss used to be a disease that had a stigma of only afflicting male victims. Nowadays, hair loss in women is gradually becoming more and more common and frequently occurring in women today. It is estimated that more than twenty five million women in America suffer Female Pattern Baldness as well as the devastating emotional impact brought about by it.
Simply put, hair loss in women due to naturally occurring phenomena that are beyond the average woman’s control. Hair loss for them could b due to stress and anxiety, hormonal fluctuations and even a genetic predisposition for female hair loss.
The most commonly seen type of hair loss occurring in women is androgenetic alopecia or what is known as female pattern hair loss. The term alopecia usually refers to full or partial hair loss or balding. Many times when it comes to women, all they notice is a gradual thinning of their hair, which of course becomes a concern especially when the hair loss escalates to a point that certain patches of hair become noticably thin. This differs from men whose hair loss has a pattern beginning at the forehead and gradually recedes backwards. Women’s hair loss on the other hand occurs primarily as partial balding in the areas on the top of the head and the sides of the head.
Most of the time, the biggest culprit in women’s hair loss is due to hormones. This is why the times when a woman usually observes that her hair loss is becoming a major issue is during times when her hormones seesaw from one extremes to another such as after pregnancy and during menopause. Even times of extreme stress can cause an increase in women’s hair loss. Stress is one of the largest causes of hair loss as it greatly affects the hormonal balance in a woman’s body. Whenever we feel overly stressed or anxious, our hormones fluctuate so much that it results in hair loss and even skin problems.
