Hair Loss Myths and Facts

There are several myths that try to explain the most common causes of baldness. Here are some of them followed by an explanation as to whether on not those hair loss myths are fact or fiction.

MYTH: Hair Loss is Inherited from the Mother’s Side
Most of the causes of hair loss in both men and women is genetics – which means hair loss is a hereditary characteristic and can be caused by genes inherited from the father’s side as well as the mother’s side.

MYTH: Wearing Hats Causes Hair Loss
Not true. In fact, hats help prevent hair loss by blocking the rays of the sun and preventing sunburn. Wearing of hats for too long can however cause excessive excretion and accumulation of sebum on hair especially in hot and humid climates.

MYTH: Excessive Blow Drying Leads to Hair Loss
The good news is, as of now, there has been no incontrovertible scientific proof that too much blow drying would cause hair to fall out. However, too much blow drying can lead to brittle and easy-to-break hair.

MYTH: Increasing Your Sexual Activity Will Make Your Hair Grow.
Unfortunately this one’s a false rumor, yet again. Scientists have found no proof that the chemicals released during sex causes hair to grow or will have a positive effect on hair loss. But for those people who refuse to believe, then there’s really no harm in trying, is there?

MYTH: Lack of Vitamins or Taking Steroids Causes Hair Loss
If the fact that you’re not eating your veggies and not taking enough vitamins is the reason for your hair loss, then why is it the only part being affected the top part of your scalp and not the back and not the sides? Taking vitamins is good for the health, that’s a fact but neither will the lack of it cause your hair to fall out in clumps until there’s none left.
However, taking of steroids CAN cause hair loss. Taking anabolic steroids usually raises the levels of the baldness causing hormones and if you’ve got a family history of hair loss, then chances are the steroids will speed up the process by as much as three to six months.
