Hair Loss, Common Beliefs, Fact or Myth? Part 3

Hairstyles can cause hair loss

Fact. Tight hair styles like ponytails, braids, or plaits put tension on the hair, and cause hair loss. Similar to winding of hair onto heated rollers, hair is prematurely pulled from the scalp, thus causing the loss of hair.

Hair dyes and hair spray aggravates the thinning hair.

Myth. Depending on your styling skills, it may even help disguise thinning hair. As long as the chemicals in your hair dyes are not excessive, it does not worsen hair loss.

To be bald means to have a heart attack.

Fact, but only partially, depending on the location of hair loss. A research showed that men who had hair loss at the front of the head, or what we call a receding hair line hardly ha increased risk of heart attack. But, those who had lost their hair at the crown of their head had a 32% increased chance of coronary disease. Extra care should be taken, eating should be healthy, and check-ups should be regular.
